New Trier Chinese 5 tackled remote learning in their winning entry《网课欢迎你》
In early February, we asked Asian language students worldwide to help us celebrate Cheng & Tsui’s 40th anniversary by filming karaoke music videos for our Superstar Karaoke Contest. By April, nearly 170 students from 35 high schools and universities all around the world had answered our call. After tallying up over 2,500 votes from the public, we are pleased to announce the winners of the 2020 Cheng & Tsui Superstar Karaoke Contest:

“Sing for Wuhan, Fight Coronavirus” - Emory University Chinese Program

The students of New Trier Chinese 5, our first place winners, have generously elected to donate their $500 prize money to the Chinese American Service League (CASL) Relief Fund. The donation will go toward the Emergency Senior Meals Project, which provides freshly cooked meals to CASL’s most vulnerable clients in the Chicago area. In a letter to Cheng & Tsui and New Trier Chinese 5, CASL Chief Executive Officer Paul Luu wrote, “Thanks to your support of CASL, people in our community are getting the help they need to make it through these difficult times.”
For many of the contestants, the Superstar Karaoke Contest was a way to make the best of difficult circumstances due to COVID-19. “As a class, we have been together for eight years, so when quarantine hit, it was hard not being able to say goodbye to each other,” said New Trier High School student Kyle Evenson. “Having this as our final group project was a really nice way to get some closure on our amazing time together.” Third place winner Avery Redlich said the contest helped her feel closer to family and friends while in quarantine: “After becoming a finalist, the messages I received made me smile and showed me that, no matter how physically distanced we are, people have never been closer.”
