The Shanghai Scholars (AKA the Kent Denver School Mandarin IV Honors Class) celebrate their winning video《成绩》on the steps of their school.
The second annual Cheng & Tsui Superstar Karaoke Contest called on Asian language students to showcase their language skills by filming their own karaoke music videos. This year, the contest engaged more than 170 students from nearly 60 high schools and universities worldwide, who delivered superb, entertaining performances of their favorite Chinese and Japanese songs.

This year, our winners sang for a cause. In light of the hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, all three winners generously elected to use their prize money to support emergency food provision and no-contact grocery distribution programs in their local communities. On their behalf, Cheng & Tsui donated a total of $1,000 to Integrated Family Community Services, Feeding South Florida, and SEAMAAC.
For our first place winners, the Shanghai Scholars, the Superstar Karaoke Contest validated the years of hard work they have put into learning Chinese: "We saw [the contest] as an opportunity to demonstrate our language proficiency and our passion for the Kent Denver language department. We're so happy that both the judges and the community loved our video!"
Avery Redlich, a student at NSU University School, performs an outstanding rendition of 《可可托海的牧羊人》.
For others, the contest motivated them to be creative and try new things. Second-place winner Avery Redlich said, “I am so honored to be a Cheng & Tsui Superstar for the second year in a row! This year, I was excited to try something different with my video, showcasing love and whimsy. As the pandemic continues, it is more important than ever to unite through music and spread love to one another.”
Congratulations again to our 2021 Cheng & Tsui Karaoke Superstars, and thanks to everyone who participated and made the contest a success!
