Marhaba! Teacher's Toolkit

Marhaba! Teacher's Toolkit

1st Edition

The Marhaba! Teacher's Toolkit provides Arabic teachers everything they need to structure a learning environment in which their students can give full play to their natural energy and creativity. Unlike a traditional language textbook, which hands teachers ready-made lessons, the Marhaba! Curriculum Guide helps teachers guide students in writing their own textbooks, while removing much of the day-to-day burden of creating or finding instructional materials.

The Marhaba! Teacher's Toolkit includes the following components:

  • Level 1 Curriculum Guide with an in-depth introduction to the pedagogy of Marhaba!, ideas for assignments and activities, lists of supplemental resources, and more!
  • Teacher Training DVD with in-class teaching demonstrations by the author, student and teacher interviews, and examples of program activities presented by real students.
  • Sample Student Daftar with a year's worth of actual activities and assignments completed by students.
  • Companion Website featuring suggested lesson assignments, authentic materials, and other teacher's resources.

About the Series

Marhaba! An Invitation to Arabic is an innovative, student-centered, standards-based Arabic curriculum that brings this rich and challenging language to life. Using the resources in the Curriculum Guides, educators guide students through the creation of personalized textbooks called daftars, a process that encourages them to take ownership of their own learning.

Marhaba! aligns with national standards and is informed by scientific research. Developed and tested for over four years by two dozen instructors and hundreds of students with diverse learning needs, the Marhaba! program has been proven to produce striking results at the middle school, high school, and college levels.

About the Author(s)

Steven Berbeco is currently Superintendent of Hopi Junior Senior High School in Keams Canyon, Arizona. He previously served as Department Chair for Japanese and Korean at the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute and Dean at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. He holds a Doctorate in Education from Boston University and Master’s degrees in Linguistics from Harvard University and Indiana University.

Dr. Berbeco developed Marhaba! after teaching Arabic in various non-traditional systems, such as an alternative inner-city high school and a refugee camp in Liberia. These experiences taught him the value of non-linear curriculum design, and he has used this learning to support his students' particular learning needs.
